Adult Cats Making Change: Tail Whiffies Matter!

J Lo 4

HIYA!! SAVANNAH HERE!!!

Who knew how a change in a relationship would be positively affected with a whiff of another cat’s tail???

Seriously? You think I want to snuffle her tail?

Seriously? You think I want to snuffle her tail?

No way…I am definitely NOT going to even try to get a whiff of Her Royal Highness Princess Savannah…well, maybe not when she can know about it

Nope, not ever never gonna 'whiff' her tail...might be painful

Nope, not ever never gonna ‘whiff’ her tail…might be painful

So the first part of this ‘breakthrough’ goes like this…

Mom L opened the front door, leaving the screen door  latched.  I, Savannah, was so excited I zipped over to check out all those fresh, fragrant outdoor whiffies….ahhhhhhhh….bliss….

Unknown to me….The Kid Sage…slipped in right behind me…and took total advantage of my innocent rapture in the fresh out of doors smells…

SHE WHIFFED MY TAIL…

Mom L did not get a photo…but she did, apparently…totally enjoy seeing The Kid Sage take such advantage of my ‘exposed’ tail…pffffttt!

Well, I say…turn about is fair play…right??!!

Who ME? Take advantage??? Why, never, no, not at all

Who ME? Take advantage??? Why, never, no, not at all

I waited, and waited…until just this week when my opportunity came along…

The Kid Sage was once again going after the “cat treat pillow stash”…

What? I was just looking!

What? I was just looking!

Yeah, right Kid!…

She is right behind me, right? Oh please Ceiling Cat protect me!!

She is right behind me, right? Oh please Ceiling Cat protect me!!

My opportunity to return the ‘tail whiffie’ finally arrived…

I am not going to be tempted

I am not going to be tempted

I resisted…honestly I did…but the urge just was too strong…

You want me do "what" with that tail??

You want me do “what” with that tail??

Yes, I DID indeed inhale…sigh…

After that bit of ‘inhalation therapy’…I just could not resist…especially after The Kid Sage decided to whap my with her tail flicking…I did, I did, I confess…I hissed…but I DID NOT WITHDRAW nor did I attack her.

That is our “Progress Report” for now.  Day by day…patience, love, kindness and understanding from our human guardians…brings me further and further into a world of trust and acceptance.

  8. Well it’s about time. The first thing we do with new arrivals is give them a good tail sniff. MOL you should have seen Arty Mouse sniffing Fenris’ bum. She had to stand on her hind legs to do it. ~Scylla & Family

  23. Ha, I knew you two get along. If you really, REALLY hated Sage around you would have attacked her when SHE took a noseful of cat bum-odour.
My two sniff at each others backside every time – and sometimes the one sniffed does not like it at all and turns around – sometimes the one sniffed is just a little annoyed and moves the tempting bum away – and at the odd moment one is too lazy – and the sniffing is accepted. THAT always ends in the funniest “befuddled” look of the sniffer … (They just look as if they were befuddled, they are analyzing the pheromones instead. They have a special organ for that, like horses, that is why the mouth is slightly opened …)
The flehmen response (/ˈfleɪmən/; German: [ˈfleːmən]), also called the flehmen position, flehmen reaction, flehming, or flehmening, is a behaviour whereby an animal curls back its upper lips exposing its front teeth, inhales with the nostrils usually closed and then often holds this position for several seconds.
Flehmen is performed by a wide range of mammals including … felids. The behaviour facilitates the transfer of pheromones and other scents into the vomeronasal organ located above the roof of the mouth via a duct which exits just behind the front teeth of the animal. *Wikipedia*
So, when upon return after an absence of you your cats show you their behind, that is just because they offer themselves for that cat ritual. Cats who allow that are usually friendly with each other.

  24. Good job not attackin!

Hissing is simply a form of communication, or that’s what I tell my HuMom anyway. Hitch doesn’t seem to find my hissing at all intimidating. Even a couple of whaps don’t detour him. Maybe I should add claws?

Wow…this is some major progress. And look at you hanging onto Sage’s tale as if it is a life preserver. Or holding it down so she can’t whap you. Either way, we hope Mom L gave you both some treats from under her pillow. Love to all. XOCK, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo

  27. Progress one day at a time – that’s the way it is with us kitties!

That was sweet of you to not attack. Good things take time, some day you will be best buddies.
