Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

Katie has a new nightly routine

I am so proud of my sisfur Katie. Like me, her early life was filled with trauma that told her humans were no trustworthy. Unlike me, Katie lived through that trauma in the first five months of her life and I, I lived it for the first five years.

We don’t know what happened to me, but we do know what happened to Katie and all of us, especially Mom L and Dad P have been working on encouraging her to reveal more and more of her REAL SELF. And she is!!

When we fostered Katie after her rescue from a horrible hoarding situation, she lived in Mom L’s office and she grew to love throwing herself down so’s Mom L could rub her belly from head to toes. But then she went through that terrible time of two round of ring worm, and then being returned three times by uncaring “adopters” and so she decided that belly rubs were no longer safe.

Hallelujah! Katie is starting to live those belly rubs again. Dad P has been working on her for about two months now, and he has turned this into her new nightly routing after her evening play time.

Oh wait! Dad P??!! Where did you go?

Are you still there Dad P? I lost you!

Once in a while Mom L can do this, but mostly Katie only allows Dad P right now. You see, Katie’s abusive hoarder was a female human and Katie still doesn’t trust Mom L as much as she does Dad P. Makes Mom L sad and she gets leaky eyes sometimes. I hope Katie will learn like I have that Mom L is gentle and kind and loves us.

Ohhhh—that feels so great

All the while Dad P is petting and brushing Katie, she rolls and rolls and rolls on our living room rug. She does it so much that Dad P has to vacuum it every other day because she rubs her loose furs off!!! MOL

Ok, now do the other side Dad P

Did any of my readers have to overcome the trust issue with your humans? Let me hear your stories in comments purrlease.

  1. I’m not really sure what happened to me, except I lost my home when I was pregnant. I had a bad experience with a man. It took me several years to be totally relaxed again. Purrs Snoops

Hooray for Katie! We love that she is learning to trust again, and that she loves those belly rubs from Dad P. Our Angel Moosey must have been abused by a female at some point, because when he first got here, he would flinch if Mom Tracey moved too quickly around him. He learned, with time, that she was the best and most loving mom ever. 🙂

  3. katie, me mackerull waz feral, trapped N stuck ina houz with de big katoona…two yeerz later eye still haz sum feer, due knot like any purrson but de gurl N like ta give de big katoona “de biznezz”…we will get ther….both oh uz 🙂 ♥♥

  4. I, Pipo didn’t have any issues, nor it seems does Benji…but Dalton is very fearful still of Pawppy and even though hew gives all the food and treats to the pups, he still might even try to bite, such as when he leaves the house to go to his car or to put out the trash.Hes a wee bit better with the unfurs, who will sit on the floor and do some bonding, but Pawppy isn’t able to get on the floor…Dalton comes up to him at mealtimes and begs for pets and scritches abut he’s vamoose as soon as he gets up. Must have been really a bad trauma he has in his baggage…he’s been here almost three years, now…sigh…

  5. I’m so glad Katie is learning the joys of belly rubs once again.

  6. That is so wonderful sweet Katie, we love your new routine!

    Aww..that is so sweet.

  8. Great for Kate! I still haven’t overcome whatever trauma I had as a kitten. I’ll still not roll over onto my back and show my stomach.

It is so good to see Katie – and you too Savvy – learning how good humans CAN be. Purrs !

  10. Katie is in exactly the right place to reveal her real self. Time is a good healer. Keep your fingers limber, Mom L. Katie will be coming for you soon!

    Love and licks,

  11. We’re so glad to see Katie enjoying herself.

Tuiren had to learn to trust the humans before she could show her true self.

It has taken Harvey six years ago o trust Paul. BUT now he is the go to feeder, chin scratcher and cuddler.

    Worth the wait 🙂

You and your readers know Mistletoe’s story, Savvy. Someday soon I’m going to have the HuMom take the time to write up Maeve’s story. Like Mistletoe, Maeve dealt with adolescent motherhood and rescue. Unlike Mistletoe, Maeve had no human contact before she was rescued. Thank you for showing people how wonderful it is to support a kitty as they search for their true selves and how the process can often help the human discover a great deal about themselves.

  16. Nelly fears all men, because of “wellyaknow” and it needs lots of time and much more time … but we saw progress and we hope it will continue…

Waving paw...HI!...what'd 'cha think...??
