Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

Thankful Thursday

Hiya Savannah Here…

I don’t do “Thankful Thursday”…in fact I just learned about it today when Mom and I were visiting some new blog furriends.

It seemed like something I wanted to do on this particular Thursday, in this particular week of this specific year…

I am so very thankful that I am a cat…not a dog that happens to be on a list for Breed Specific Laws (BSL) somewhere in the USA or elsewhere in the world…especially in Belfast Ireland.  I am thankful I have a forever  home from which I can never be torn. I am thankful I have food, shelter, loving touches and guardians who make sure I am healthy, and I am thankful I am forever safe from harm’s way.  Dad and Mom are truly my special Guardians. I am thankful this Thursday and everyday forward.

Mom, Dad and I did all we could do over the last months and then weeks, then days to Tweet, sign petitions, email government officials here and in Northern Ireland, which is a part of the UK, not to be confused with the Republic of Ireland…trying to help save a lovely innocent dog named Lennox.

Millions around the Twitter, Anipal Blogging and Face Book world were stunned to learn that on Tuesday this week, the Belfast City Council put Lennox to death.

Belfast dog Lennox put to sleep after 2-year fight – Yahoo! News

What he did to break the law was look like a pit bull type dog. He was never aggressive, lived happily with his family and two years ago, BSL slammed him into harm’s way.

The candles are to remember Lennox…and hope the human, biped, peep world learns from this mistake and miscarriage of laws. Can’t we live together in peace and goodwill? Peeps and animals???

For Lennox….the candles burn brightly to guide his way OTRB…

…RIP LENNOX…

As you read my post today, please know that many dog breeds, mixed breeds too as was Lennox…remain in danger from BSLs…and so many more may come to suffer because of them in future. What will we all do together to make it safe for bipeds AND dogs?

Many of our dear blog anipals are in danger of falling within the BSL rules that not only talk about the type, look of the dog…but I learned from my pal Clowie in Spain, that some BSLs even go to the extent of prescribing weight restrictions for dogs that can be deemed ‘dangerous’.  Makes Clowie very nervous.

And of course, many of you know my pal Rumpy…he is a Malmute, one of the top 7 dangerous breeds recognized by insurance companies in the USA…my beloved Siberians are on the top 7 list as well.

So, I don’t know the right answer…I do know in our family we are going to start trying hard to find ways to work on it though…so lots of dogs like Lennox will have a life filled with forever Thankful Thursdays.

This is me…being thankful that I can sleep forever in safety…

Thanks for reading my post today, I am grateful for all the love and warmth you bring to me everyday.

  1. Well pawed my furry pal!

Sorry it took me so long to get ovFUR here –

Yes, I would be on ‘The List” but my only khrime is fuzzing things –

Lennox has a special place ovFUR The Rainbow Bridge – the sekhtion dedikhated to those killed by unhumans –

    Hugz&Khysses,
    Khyra

    • oh Khyra, I hope I wrote a meaningful post for Lennox…we tried so hard to save him. Leaky eyes here efurry time we think about him. Khyra, were you rescued??? Just curious…we really enjoy walking with you. That was my Mom’s fave thing to do with her Sibes…long, long walks…sigh

We were so sad to hear of the murder of sweet Lennox. We sure hope someone wises up and stops all of this. There is no reason to ever punish a breed. Sweet Lennox is running free now and no one can ever hurt him again. Rest in peace sweet boy. Hugs and nose kisses

    • But Chancy, you guys need to work with all of us and try to talk to other peeps about changing the BSLs…there are other ways to achieve the goal, keeping peeps safe from dog attacks and bites. Most of it is about education of the peeps themselves!! Big work ahead, sigh

  3. Wonderful post. I am Lennox! BSLs are no different from racism and have no place in a civilized society. Next month Miami/Dade County will be voting to overturn their ban on pit bulls. I hope they vote yes. BTW, Lennox, too, thought he was safe at home with his loving family before, like the Nazi’s they came and got him. Cats aren’t safe either as many communities are following Loew’s Orlando and abandoning their TNRs and instead trapping and killing.

    • I know Cathy K…but I am indoor only. I won’t ever go outside again, I am safe. So I am thankful. Not all cats are though, and I know that oh so well having been out there and then dumped at a kill public shelter…saved on the last day and taken to a no kill shelter. We agree, BSL feels like racism, only against dogs, not people. I think some of the Cat’s From Hell on that Jackson show could show up on BSl if the peeps really get crazier about this. I heard talk of the need to eliminate some breeds of dogs completely, mostly the top 7 most dangerous, esp. pitties. sigh I will keep on working to change things…long road ahead

  4. We still can’t believe it, Savannah, and we don’t forget that at one time black cats persecuted for perceived dangers of their color as well. We worry for all the animals who might be in danger from any BSL because they can’t speak for themselves, and no one listens to we humans. ~Mimi and her Fantastic Four

    • Oh Mimi and the Fantasmic Four and Kelly and Coco…our anifamily canines are in such danger from the bipeds. And yes, black cats, and black dogs, are still 40% less likely to be adopted from shelters than other colors. Mom has a fave 2 year old male cat, Clover, at my former shelter whom she just adores. He is so very loveable, a lap sitter…we hope he gets adopted. BSL is not the answer to a condition it is trying to remedy. Wish we had the answer, but we will stay focused going forward trying to help. paw pats, Savvy

  5. Savannah you truly did say it all…..how we all feel…..what we all think about what happened to Lennox and so many others like him all over the world. Also, like you, I am ever so grateful that I am safe in my forever home and thankful that my parents rescued me all those years ago. RIP Lennox – no doubt he’s lying in the sun over the Rainbow Bridge now glad that the rest of us will be carrying on the cause…………

    Kitty hugs, Sammy

  6. Its a very worrying time to be a doggy that’s for sure. That’s why I’m now a pony BOL.

  7. So sad and so needless! I did say that after two years incarcerated, Lennox might have been damaged beyond help!! So cruel! Heartfelt and wonderful post, Savvy xox

  8. A very thoughtful post Savannah!
Lots of people are saddened and angered by what happened to Lennox. But there are lots of people who have no idea of the extent of BSL laws. There has been very little coverage in the mainstream media – and much less that could be called balanced reporting.
People need to be aware of these laws and how things are changing.

  10. Oh sweet girl, we has the sads about that too. We will purray for all the animals, even the doggies.

But we are CATS, at the very TOP of creation, no matter what those deluded Humans might think.

  12. Thank you for such a WONDERFUL post! We were all shocked about the careless and shameful actions of the council in charge.

You are such a sweet girl. xx We are all so happy you, and our furends, are being cared for by hoomans who are pet lovers above all else!

  13. So if the Belfast Council can discrimate against Lennox because of the way he looks, does that mean that we can discrimate against all them by saying that all people from Belfast must be idiots?

There’s nothing more to say…. you’ve said it so very, very well.

  15. Wonderful post, Savannah. So totally frustrating and sad…
    RIP, Lennox.
    Play bows,
    Zim

    • ohhh Zim and Dave, thank you so much. We just wrote from my heart…and can you believe that Sibes are the 4th on the USA insurance companied dangerous dog list??? Dad and Mom about lost if over that one…play bows to you all, and some Savanah paw pats too…

  16. Sad that some people who probably don’t know that much about animals would arbitrarily decide whether we are dangerous or not, like it was the case for Lennox.

  17. That was a terrific and thoughtful post sweet Savannah. How can something so very sad make me so very mad? RIP dear Lennox, the rest of the world loves you.

    • I know, huh? Makes us feel so powerless…but I think Rumpy’s Mom Jen will keep information flowing on BSL and probably others. So maybe some of us can find ways to make these laws more appropriate so they do keep people safer, but not at the expense of entire breeds of dogs…seems wrong…thank you for appreciating my post…was worried about doing it a bit…sigh
