Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

Talking About An Impawtant Place adn Peep…

Hiya!  Savannah Here!

I want to tell you about my former shelter, Kitty Corner, which is owned and run by a private no kill dog and cat rescue organization, Contra Costa Humane Society.  And you are now asking yourself…”hmmm, wonder why Savannah wants to talk about her former shelter??”

The answer is this…I have nominated the bestest ever volunteer I ever met, Miss Tammy Rieser,  for the Dog Time Unsung Hero Petties Award.  This award is for a peep who goes above and beyond to help us animals find our furever homes.  And you will recall, Miss Tammy does indeed go “above” ‘cuz among the humongous number of groups with whom she volunteers, one of those is Pilots ‘N Paws…(get it??? “above and beyond”??)

She is the peep I talked lots about in my July 15 B4TC post.  Miss Tammy is the person who pulled me out of the county kill shelter the day before I was to be destroyed, she fostered me a few days until a space was open at Kitty Corner for me. Miss Tammy has been volunteering for over 20 years…she has a full time paid job…but she makes time to give to us cats and dogs every day.

The winner will be the volunteer with the most nominations. And the prize is $10.000 dollars for a shelter of the winner’s choice (must be a 501c3 non-profit). So, I know I am late to this Award Nomination, I just completed it late yesterday and nominations end August 17 midnight, I think EST.

So if you have not nominated someone, please consider doing so for Miss Tammy Rieser. You don’t have to write lots about her, just what you know from me would be enough. Her shelter she volunteers for most is Contra Costa Humane Society, you need that to nominate her. And her email you can get from me if you decide to nominate her.

Ok, that’s my pitch.  Now here is some fun stuff about Kitty Corner!  We do not have a facility for dogs, so all dogs we pull from the county kill shelter must be placed in foster homes. No easy task.

Our kittens also go into foster homes, and most of our adult and special need cats we pull from the county shelter come to Kitty Corner, my former shelter before Dad and Mom got me.

…our small but friendly free roam shelter…this is in the back end…

…and this is looking down the enclosures…we only use these for cats when they first come so they can acclimate…or we use them if we have someone ill, or hurt…otherwise the cats can roam about freely…

…and here are some cute photos Mom wanted to share of some of her fave past and current residents…

…first up is Miss Murphy, long gone to her furever home…but she struck this cute pose the day before she left and Mom had some fun with it…

…then there was Buddy…about 17 pounds of solid, not fat, huge Tabby…very relaxed as you can see…

…and Mom posted this but doesn’t know where she found it…so my apology if I have taken this without appropriate permission…but I wanted to share it so I can talk about the dilemma rescue black cats face…

…did you  know that black cats are 40% less likely to be adopted than any other color???…Mom and I never knew that.

So Mom wants to share some of our current black cat residents…or like the next one, Joey, who is in foster care right now to give him a break from Kitty Corner…

…here he is being naughty…Mom left a spoon in the sink with a teeny bit of canned food on it…it was in there to be washed up…(we only feed canned food to give meds in)…anywho…she turned around and this is what she saw…just a black butt and tail…

…and then Mom discovered Joey’s secret one day…he is a toilet drinker!!!…

…this is Joey before he went into a foster home…he came to Kitty Corner from the shelter after having been attacked by a dog…he is one brave guy!!…

…and he is back at Kitty Corner for a couple of days right now while his Foster Dad takes a vacation…so Mom caught this photo of him Saturday…can you see how gorgeous he is??!!  All filled out, his fur all grown back…

…this is another black cat resident, Clover…2 years old…he is just completing an 8 week confinement in an enclosure after surgery for a fractured hind leg…

…and last, but never least…Miss Dolly…Mom luvluvluvs Miss Dolly…she is about 9 years old…a bit chunky, but she starts to purrrr if you just look at her…she has been at Kitty Corner for months now…she is black tuxedo…but her color and age affect how peeps see her I guess…

…this is Snow White…she is about 8 years old…she is all white, blue eyes and Mom thinks she is partially deaf…

…now precious Sasha…she is like me…gray and white…and like me…she was so shy and scared…she stayed in her cubby, hiding and not eating or drinking much at all.  So the staff has her upstairs now in their office…all by herself..Mom and Dad take care of her on the weekends and visit her about 3x a day…she is really coming along….she is about 4 years old..

…Mom gave her the silvervine toy she got for me…I didn’t like it…as you can see…Sasha totally luvluvluvs it!!…check out her tongue!!…MOL

That’s it…I hope you enjoyed seeing some of the cats at my former shelter, Kitty Corner.

And I hope you will think about nominating someone for the Unsung Hero Award…there are so many peeps like Miss Tammy, who go unrecognized, but who give so generously to helping animals find safe loving homes.

  1. so sad about the black cats. My human had one once. He wasn’t wanted either but he found a good home with my human 🙂

  2. Hey Savvy, Jetty here. Hi Miss Linda.

What a special post. Thanks to you both for sharing the residents and the shelter itself.

My sister, Rachel, rescued a black cat, named Bella 2 years ago. She lives at Rachel’s dad’s house. I haven’t met her, Mom tells us she’s beautiful.

Black Pearls come in feline and K9 varieties… unfortunately, the same percentage goes for K9s too. 😦

Miss Tammy is terrific… Mom will work on that tomorrow. 🙂

    • I know it is the same for black canines..your Mom told us. I should have mentioned that too, so sorry Jetty. And if Miss Lori can do a short nominate for Miss Tammy, that would be wonderful…here is her email ‘cuz that is needed in the on line form: tamara.rieser@yahoo.com and the shelter to name is Contra Costa Humane Society. If you don’t have time, no problem, we just learned about this award this year, so have never done this before. play bows, Savannah

  4. They are all so lovely, I would have them all if i could!

  5. They are all adorable – wish I could take on more kitties – but I think my kitties might beat me up if I tried that. I liked Joey especially – the sneaky sneak 🙂

  6. So far we’ve had three black cats and they’ve all been rescues. All rescue centres say the same – we should have moved on a little by now 😦

    • don’t ya think!!?? What the heck is it with peeps?? sigh…our black cats always are some of the last to be adopted…no matter their age…and of course, it is the same for black dogs…just ask Jetty over at Hi, It’s Jet Here blog. paw pats, Savannah

  7. I like black cats, remind me of little panthers :o)

We luffed all the pictures. I was a lucky Black Boy! My Human nefur knew about the problems black kitties have getting ‘dopted till a couple years ago–and I am her second one!

If you send the email to me (spittythekitty@live.com) I will nominate her!

  9. I knew that black cats had a much harder time getting adopted, but I didn’t know that it extended to tuxies, too. Your shelter is doing great work. I was labelled “difficult to place” and only survived because of my foster Mom and my adopted Mom.

    Herman

    • Hi Herman!! I just left a long comment over on your blog…please add a follow by email button so I can follow you. I am so happy Oja is out and about more…great! And thank Cod I was moved to this shelter, ‘cuz even THEY labeled me almost unplaceable!! I was so terrified I stayed in a cubby bed with my back to the opening almost all the time. But Dad saw me, reached in and I purred while he pet me, and in a few days, he and Mom took me home to foster, then a month later…They adopted me!! paw pats to you Herman, and paw hugs to all, Savannah

  10. Wow, what a great place! We’re glad they saved you so your people could come find you!

  11. Sigh. We’re not in touch with my shelter anymore cos they refused to pick up some donations we had for them. My peeps don’t have a car so they couldn’t drop them off. Now we’re working for another rescue which we love very much. Good luck to Miss Tammi. I miss seeing you at my place.

  12. If only every unsung hero could be recognized.

That does look like a really nice shelter and a really nice volunteer. Those volunteers and foster people are so important in helping to find homeless animals their new homes. Hope you have a great evening.

    • you too! and thanks so much for always stopping by. I don’t know if I follow you or not ‘cuz your comments don’t allow me to click on your avatar and go to your site. If you have a blog, I would follow. paw pats, Savannah

  14. That really does look like a very caring place and the kitties are so adorable!

    • it is a nice shelter environment, except for the floor…notice it is indoor/outdoor carpet…and we have had cats who have left many pee-mail messages…we are trying to get funds to replace it with vinyl or just finish the cement floor underneath…always comes down to money…and we are so small..only 1 1/2 staff 40 volunteers and our fosters.

  15. Maxwell: Momma’s gone and fallen in loooove with a black kitty at our shelter – she’s a purebred Bombay with the softest furs E-V-E-R. And no one wants her!
FaRADaY: Yeah, an’ she has a pawesome personality – just exactly like mine, Mommy sez!
Allie: (and they wonder why….) No, seriously. Mother would take her in an instant if she got along with other kitties. *sigh* it’s so unfair that black cats are maligned like that!

    • I know, I know…Mom really wants Clover, the kitty who had the broken leg. She took care of him when he was first injured and had surgery (that is she ran transport for him to the vets and visited him and gave him his meds) she would bring him home, but I am an only cat…I am afraid of other cats….sigh

  16. We have three black cats in our furry family ,and we are 13…all good luck as far as we are concerned!!! One of us (not a black cat) was rescued from death row…it’s a scary place. Mum used to volunteer in a no kill shelter…she used to socialize the scaredy cats (but she’s useless with humans!!) .
Black cats are cool…HECK every cat is cool.

    Big Hugs, great photies..Luv’s yoz..
    Alf and Mollie xxxx

    • Oh My Cat!!! I hope you Mum likes volunteering at RSPCA. I can’t recall, do your public shelters destroy the cats and dogs after a few days or weeks? Or are they not allowed to?? My Mom could not and would not volunteer at a shelter where they destroy the animals if they don’t get adopted. I am sorry it has been so long since I regularly did comments, but we a slugging away again tonight, Tuesday, hoping to get caught up. huge paw hugs for all, Savannah

What the RSPCA involves, is going into homes, checking that the animals are being well cared for, if not they are placed in new homes 🙂 Non of them are put to sleep…wez couldn’t do dat….We are getting much better at looking after our animals in the UK now.. they advertise on the telly for homes or foster parents needed. The morning show, brings in dogs and cats that need new homes, then people phone in.
oh my book came..wonderful 🙂 fanks yoz sooo much..I want to do big post about it 🙂 xxx000xxx

        • First, so glad you got the book!! Yea!! And we wondered if the RSPCA would be different than the SPCA here in the US and it is. Thank COD they don’t destroy the dogs and cats…sigh…wish the USA would be less barbaric about that…and we still allow peeps to declaw (mutilate) cats!! paw hugs to Alfie and Mollie to, even tho’ she is wild and crazy doggie!! MOL

  18. I know you came from a shelter but it really does look like a great place. Looks very similar to Cat-A-Holics here, where the cats roam free unless they are new arrivals or ill. Kind of becomes more of a home than a shelter. How lucky you were to be saved at the last minute – and how lucky for us because we get to know you here.

    • oh my yes…I was so fortunate to be saved from the kill shelter and eventually found a place at Kitty Corner. It was nice.. I was just so terrified, and their shelter so new, that not many knew how to manage my fear and so labeled me “antisocial” and “never plays”…that is just the nature of how peeps are trained as volunteers…at least that is my bias…

  19. Hi Savannah…..what a bunch of great photos of the kitties at Kitty Corner. It’s nice they have a pretty place like that to stay while they wait for their forever homes. Your parents are sweet to volunteer there too! My Mom and I have never understood why people are so silly about black cats. Sleek black shiny coats are so beautiful and they need love just as much as any other color cat!!! People can be kind of silly sometimes can’t they?!

    Kitty Hugs, Sammy

  20. Wow, that is some tongue Sasha has!!!
This is an eye opening post Savvy

  21. Well, I think that peoples who don’t like black cats are just plain dumb. As I am sure everyone knows, my Sweet Ba-Boo is a black cat and he is just as handsome as can be!

  22. Sixten = the cat who lived here before me he was all black !
My mom can´t understan either why black cats is less adoptable ??!!

  23. My human’s first cat when she was a kid was a black cat. She loved him very much. But she told me that there were some people in her family that didn’t want to cat sit him because they thought he would bring bad luck.
My human told me that she was a kid and at the time didn’t understand. But now that she’s an adult she even less understand.
    Sad human superstitions (vocab builder).
