Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

Let’s Make International Animal Rescue Rock!!

Hiya!   Savannah Here!

I just read yesterday about the Extreme Pet Blogger Blog Hop, which celebrates posts about International Animal Shelter/Rescue Awareness, from August 17-24.  Oh My Cat!!! How could I not have known??? So embarrassing!  So I jumped over to pick up the badge from Two Little Cavaliers

Then, I started to ponder (vocab builder project) what I could write about that is about animal rescue and international…hmmmmm…tapping one claw up, down, up, down…tail twitching….thump, thump…swish, swish…

I GOT IT!!!…runs to tell Mom…Mom, Mom!!!…I wanna write about Wolf Haven International!!!  OK???

Why of course Savvy, that is a great idea!!  We have supported them for over 20 years!!  And you don’t know yet, but Savvy…yes Mom?…Your Dad gives me one birthday gift every year…he “Adopts a Wolf” for me each year, and gets me the Wolf Haven Calendar.  I get a different wolf each year.

Wowie Mom…that’s so cool!!

Alrighty, here are just a couple of really cool things to know about Wolf Haven International.

First their mission:

“Our mission is to conserve and protect wolves and their habitat.  We rescue and provide sanctuary for displaced, captive-born wolves, promote wolf restoration in historic ranges and educate the public about the value of wildlife. ”

They mostly give  sanctuary to Gray Wolves, Mexican Gray Wolves, Red Wolves and on a case by case basis, They seem to be giving sanctuary to 3 wolf hybrids.  They also have 3 coyotes.

On their website they state:

“Wolf Haven still stands firm in its opposition to breeding, selling, owning, trafficking and promoting wolfdogs (and wolves) as pets—and we believe that most wolfdogs are bred and purchased by people who are unaware of the animals’ highly unique physical and social needs, behavioral traits, and possible characteristics.”

To this end, we have started our Think Again campaign as a public service, made possible by a grant from the Thurston County Humane Society, Inc., located in Olympia, WA.”

I encourage my followers to take a hop over to visit the Wolf Haven International site…they are a great organization.  I know they have also been involved in the reintroduction of the Mexican Gray Wolf and the Eastern Red Wolf  back into their habitat.

Mom’s wolf for this year is Shadow…isn’t he gorgeous???…

I could not use any photos from the website as they are, rightly so, copyright photos.

I hope you enjoyed learning about Wolf Haven International…Mom and Dad not only adopt a wolf every year on Mom’s birthday, they also often give their Christmas donation to Wolf Haven. And, Mom and Dad have visited Wolf Haven twice!  They are located outside Olympia, WA in Tenino…beautiful country.  And there are many wolves who are “on tour”…and no…you CANNOT GET CLOSE AND YOU CANNOT PET THEM!!  They are wolves!

Oh yeah, and Mom and Dad used to have 3 Siberian Huskies, you can see them on my page “Anifamily OTRB“…and each of their Sibes has a memorial stone in a courtyard at Wolf Haven.

Have a great Saturday and thanks to Life With DogsConfessions of the Plume and Two Little Cavaliers for hosting the Saturday Blog Hop.

  1. Your Humans are so gorgeous, please invite me if Shadow will visit you!!!

    • oh wow…that would be pawsome to have Shadow here…but he is like pretty totally wild…thank Cod! He is not a ‘pet’…which someone tried to make him..now he has a ‘mate’ and they love each other…Wolf Haven DOES NOT BREED…they use some type of birth control, not spay or neuter…but they know wolves mate for life and always find each wolf it furrever partner..isn’t that nice???

  2. That is very cool Savannah! So in essence you have a few wolf fur-sibs! We love the memorial stone idea too. Great org to support!

  3. Savannah I know you are very proud of all the wonderful work your parents do on behalf of all kinds of animal rescues including the beautiful wolves. Shadow is REALLY a very handsome animal. Big Sammy Hugs to your parents and to you for telling us all about the wolf rescue.

    Your Friend Sam

  4. Wolves are very mysterious and beautiful creatures.

  5. Wonderful post Savannah. The Red Wolf is our favorite, as red wolves were native to our area and have been reintroduced in North Carolina.

    • Wolf Haven has been a part of that reintroduction. They keep wild Red Wolves in the back of their property, away from human contact. They ‘feed’ them in such a way as to have almost not human contact or scent…and they have had Red Wolf pups which have been sent off for re introduction in their normal habitat. Very cool place is Wolf Haven.

      • It sounds great. I know they had trouble in the beginning at Alligator NWR in NC because some of the wolves relocated there were too habituated to humans, which put them in danger. For a while they placed breeding pairs off the coast of South Carolina on Bull Island so that litters were born wild, then trapped and moved to Alligator. I think they are still doing this now on one island of three they initially started with, but they no longer do it on Bull Island.

  6. That is so cool! Pop used to adopt cows from the Popcorn Park Zoo, which is in NJ and is a sanctuary for animals that were abused by farms and circuses and zoos and stuff. Did you know today is International Homeless Animals Day and the peeps were too busy to let me blog about it? Sigh.

  7. That is wonderful Savannah, every critter needs love, hope and respect. Hooray for helpers everywhere!

    • Alfie, I know you don’t have Wolves in the UK…but in the USA, they have been a very endangered species. and Mom and Dad have supported their reintroduction into the Western USA, starting with Yellowstone National Park, over 15 years ago. Long hard work but worth it.

Waving paw...HI!...what'd 'cha think...??
