Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

I Have a Voice!!…Who Knew!!

It seems sort’a silly when I think about it…a cat that doesn’t know it can use its MEOW to get stuff done, emmmmm, by the peeps, of course! And that voice is good to defend the house when on patrol too!

A couple of things to share today…I have a voice!  And if I use it just right…I can get Dad and Mom to do stuff for me….and I can let them know I like something they do, like feed me!

When I was in the shelters, I mostly never said a thing…no meows, no purrs, no nuttin’ came out of my voice…then when I got my furrever home, I started to talk to Mom a bit…just about some stuff like my memories and things…and I started to talk just a bitty bit with Dad…mostly sports ‘cuz he likes that, but sometimes we talk politics or I watch the Military Channel with him…he likes that historical stuff so he brushes me, I purr to let him know I like it and we watch TV.

Now, here’s what I am discovering about my voice…and I can be really loud!  Who Knew!!  This morning for the first time, I decided I needed my brekkies and did not want to wait for Mom and Dad to get up…so I helped MOM!  You Got It!!!  I helped her by using my VOICE!!

First, I sleep between them…so I decide to walk right across Moms butt to her other side (I never walk across her, I always go around, not this time)….so I am now right in her face and I USE MY VOICE…MMMEEEOOOWWWW!!! about an inch from her nose!  Wow…she woke right up!!!  Wooo Hooo….I am gettin’ it…use the voice, especially a loud one…to get nom noms….and to get the ‘rents to do it when I want it….ok,ok,ok…got that!

Then I learned I can encourage Dad to walk a bit faster to get my brekkies if I FOLLOW him down the hall to the kitchen and surpervise him prepping my nom noms! Course, I talk to him the whole time so’s he knows I am anxious and starving….worked pretty good this morning so will do again tomorrow….

Finally, last night I was completing my final patrol of the house…and I found the breakfast room slider still open…so I sat there a bit takin’ in the night breeze…and OH MY CAT!!!!  Another cat came on my deck….so I USED MY VOICE to protect the house and let Dad and Mom know they were in danger!!!  YOWL…GRRROOOWWLLL…WAROWWWW…and so on….got Dad to come runnin’…he took care of that cat…but I USED MY VOICE to save us…

After all, this is now my furrever home and I need to start taking part…I am learning about using my voice…

Course, I don’t have any corresponding photos to go with this new learning…but thought ya might like to see me playin’ with my paper bag PLUS the shredded newspaper my pals Nibbles, Nutty, Bingo and Buddy over at Hutch A Good Life told me to use…WILD, CRAZY noise it makes…luvluvluv it!!

…first the ole’ ‘check it out’ move…

…then check it from other angles in case something is gonna grab me…

..now rough up that shredded newspaper…what a ruckus it makes…luvluvluv it!

…finally…enjoy late afernoon sun puddles when I am spent from playing with another new thing…

I had a really good day and night Monday…hmmmm…maybe because it was a special day to remember others who had the courage to stand up for something and  sacrifice for it…both humans and canines…hmmm…wonder if that is helping me to find the power of my voice….need a nap to ponder that…

  1. It’s great that you can begin to tell them what you want. They’ll get better at understanding you, especially if you yell even louder!

  2. That’s so great that you’re using your voice and everything now. You’re building confidence, I think. That’s wonderful! purrs

    • yep…I still have lots more to do…right now I am still avoiding Dad, I kind;a run whenever he gets too close…it has been almost 2 weeks since the “nail trim” day…he has to do the ole’ scruff hold on me and then I take a long time to forget…I know he loves me lots…

  3. Hi Savannah, we think we’re going to be excommunicated by your Mum and Dad, but wonder if you’ve met Simon’s Cat? He has a few extra tricks up his sleeve on how to wake humans and get them to feed you…

We still cry with laughter at this film and hope you find it funny too 🙂

  4. Hey Savannah, you realised pretty quick I think that hoomens are a bit fick when it comes to the non verbals, so looks like you are learning real fast. They need it loud and they need it long, especially, for some reason, at 3a.m.!!! They absolutely love it if you sing at that time and make biscuits on their chest. My mom says something like “fluddiell!” a lot and that’s a good thing 🙂

  5. Keep practicing those loud voices, your humans will really appreciate that! And walking on them while they sleep is a great massage method, good for their peace of mind.

    • ohhhh…I didn’t know about the ‘massagey’ thingy…very good advice…I will try again tomorrow with Mom…she is more tolerant than Dad when I try new stuff…she just giggles and gives me a chin scratch

  6. I soooooo wish there was a “love” button because I LOVE reading about all of your wonderful accomplishments and all that you are learning! You don’t need the photos to go with what you told us because dear kitty, you have incredibly fabulous writing skill! I love reading all of your new adventures! You are precious!!! You are also a thoughtful and deep kitty! xoxoxo

    • thank you so much for the writing compliments…I am never sure if I am just too casual…I mean, I don’t really know any of the readers personally, so not sure what they like and stuff…so I just try to stick to my Mission, telling about my recovery steps…and trying to speak for all the adult rescue shelter cats who son’t have access to iPad and laptop…thank you again…purrrrrrr

  7. ooooh, you are gonna have so much FUN! Our fave is the 3 AM aria–the peeps shout with joy when you sing them!

    • oh…I have only done the 3AM fitness workout…ya know…run down hallway, through family room, into dining room, through living room…up to entry then up the stairs to the office (its right over our bedroom downstairs0…all of these rooms have wood floors…cool! Nice and thumpy! now I am starting to whack some toys around for good measure…really tires me out so I can get right back to sleep for the rest of the night…

  8. It’s great that you found your voice. Like us food seems to have motivated your squeak box to work (though as a cat you do not squeak, maybe whee should called it a mew box when refering to you!)

Thank you for the mention. Whee knew you would love the noise it makes! Have you tried jumping on the bag with the newspaper inside it yet?! 🙂

    xxxx

    • oh, jump on the bag whhhiilleee the paper shred are in it???!!! Cool…I will need Dad or Mom to entice me ‘cuz that would be pretty risky for me…but I’ll ask ’em to do it to night during my playtime before bed. And yep I think I have a mew box, not a squeak one…MOL, or should I also say SOL

  9. Glad you’re using your voice. Our voices are very powerful you know.
You should talk to Milou, he’s very good at the wake up thing 😉
    Purrs…

    • oh my cat! ya should’a heard me yowling at that outdoor kitteh last night! I scared Mom right out of wits…I heard her say that thing she always says, sort’a like “holy sheep” or something. I was totally LOUD! whew, close call…

  10. Savannah, that’s great……that’s why we have a voice – so we can protect ourselves and our families AND we can “talk” to our humans to help them understand what we need. It’s great you protected your family last night – BRAVO! That’s VERY brave of you.

    Concatulations,
    Kitty Hugs, Sammy

    • Appreciate your thoughts Sammy…I did not use my voice for probably a year, at least that’s what Dad and Mom think. So we all get pretty excited when I talk…and boy am I chatty these days! I just never knew I could use my voice to get Dad and Mom to do stuff for me…what a concept!

Oh miss Savannah! you are so smart and so brave!

I have a little voice but I don’t use it that much yet. However, when I was hiding in that awful hole under that building, so scared cause I didn’t know where my cat mommy was, I did use my voice and it was LOUD. So loud that my [now] human mommy heard me from HER balcony several stores above the ground.

Good thing we have our voices, right?

  12. Just remember, when in doubt, shout it out!

Savannah, I love it that you’ve found your voice! And it sounds like Mom is pretty calm. I’m afraid that I would jump a foot or so off the bed if someone woke me up by getting in my face and meowing. Plus I would say some bad words.

I love the idea of shredded newspaper in a paper bag, too! I’ll have to remember that one.

Thanks also for mentioning the people and dogs whose sacrifices we remember on Memorial Day. There was at least one cat, too. He was a ship’s cat in the British Navy. He was a sturdy black and white short-haired “moggie”.
