Cats, Dogs, Coyotes and Wolves: A mysterious connection Part One

HIYA!! SAVANNAH HERE!!!

This blog post is important in particular to anyone in the USA who has indoor/outdoor cats, dogs or is a caretaker of feral cat populations.

It is important for our international readers as well because global ecosystems are endangered…and  humans are right at the top of the charts as owning causal responsibility.

I will paw this post over to Mom L because she has lots to share. Hope you will stick around and read the post and also come back for Parts Two and Three.

Mom L here…

There is a direct link between being able to diminish the number of cats and small dogs being killed by coyotes and the survival and growth of all three wolf species in the USA.

The wolf is the top predator in the USA wilds. Bringing them back directly impacts the coyote population in the wild.

Fewer coyotes in the wild means their food sources will be more plentiful; then logical deduction suggests there will be fewer and fewer coyotes who will have to move into urban areas to feed on our cats who are allowed outside, and feral cat populations who have no protection as well as on small dogs who may be roaming loose or even in an enclosed yard.

We have long been committed in our family to supporting the reintroduction of the Gray wolf into parts of the Northern USA, specifically, the initial reintroduction in Yellowstone National Park in 1995-1996. Our belief was that they would contribute to returning  a lost balance in the ecosystem in this part of the USA.

Our trip to Yellowstone in the winter of 2006 offered these sightings of  5 wolf packs, among about 20 packs,  during our week long tour. One of the packs is shown close up on a week old kill…to caution anyone who might be bothered.

In just 10 years from 1996-2006, ecosystem balance, in many ways, had already begun. I have a link to a great report listed below. Suffice it to say, one very visible impact of bringing back the top predator in the ecosystem, the Gray Wolf, reduced the coyote population by 80%. The remaining coyotes are more leery of humans and are now hunting the small animals and rodents that bring balance in another way rather than preying on campsites, garbage and loose dogs brought in by tourists.

I hope I have managed to grab the interest of some of Savannah’s readers so as to encourage you to return for Part Two and Part Three of ” Cats, Dogs, Coyotes and Wolves: A Mysterious Connection”. Part Two will post December 1 and Part Three will post December 3.

 Be Well, Mom L

It took some doing as Mom L and Dad P have discovered that their iPads are not taking the quality photos they once did…who knows why…but thank you ever so much Ms Apple!

As you can tell, I was very excited to join this blog hop.  Well, maybe ‘excited’ is a bit of an overstatement….??

Lastly, I know most of you already know we have lost another amazing feline pal, Nylablue. She made her journey to Summerland on Saturday with her devoted and loving human Mum and best friend, Ms Sherri-Ellen holding her to insure she knew she was ever so special…Nylablue will remain forever in my heart as “Sweet Feet”…and my very best furriend. Click HERE to wish Nylablue the blessings of Ceiling Cat on her journey and to offer her Mum the support of Blogville.

Friday Frolics

HIYA!! SAVANNAH HERE!!! Not a lot of frolics going on around here…except for The Kid Sage of course. I have been having some fun checking out the controls in my Three Way Teleport Tunnel…Mom caught me doing some fine tuning on the space time continuum calibrations…getting ready for our next search for the elusive long forgotten Necata canipbis…but I am totally digressing…ahem…

What? The space time calibrations need some work!

What? The space time calibrations need some work!

I have also been making sure everything around my step is in order and no one has made any adjustments in the height…I would totally know because then my front legs would like be dangling or something…

Yup, just the right height

Yup, just the right height

It has been pretty tiring doing all that work so I of course have been doing some of my frolics on my back…na’mean???

Frolic, frolic, frolic...zzzzzzz

Frolic, frolic, frolic…zzzzzzz

Ahem, koff, koff…moving on… Mom visited her friend Dr Josie, (Dr Josie was my Vet before she retired), and she got a great look at one of Dr Josie’s 6 cats being hospitable to a wee kitten she is fostering for a couple of weeks. The adult cat is 12 year old Captain Folker, of The Kitty Platoon

captain fokker uniform

and the kitten is a foster …Princess Violetta who is all of about 10 weeks old.

She has been running with the Captain and his other indoor brothers for a couple of weeks…she had a promised home…but they said they couldn’t take her right away for two weeks..then they abandoned her..”she is too small”…WHAT?.

CAN YOU BELIEVE???…anyway, she has already developed a long list and now down to a short list of adopters and will be headed to her forever home next week…but not before Mom got these shots ala silhouette…(click to bigify and see whole captions)

Well all is well that ends in a hiss I say…and I have some recent experience with that as you know…heh…heh…Princess Violetta took off after one of the other Kitty Platoon members and the Captain returned to his nap.  The Princess has selected one suitor to entertain over the weekend…she will likely be in her forever castle ASAP!!

I have been saving some photos of The Kid Sage until Mom Linda was like TOTALLY DESPERATE for something to post on my blog…she truly is a crazy sisfur…yeah, yeah…I allowed her on my king size bed this morning without a hiss, TWICE…guess she is gonna wanna be my sisfur…bummer, huh?…heh…heh

peeEss...The Kid Sage has a harness to play with…ok…to be tortured trained with because it appears she may, just may have some inclination toward being a therapy cat.  Only time and Dad’s love and training will tell…but she is so amazingly confident, yet gentle and trusting of all humans…it is a possibility…and well…Mom and I decided Dad needed a new project!!!!!!!!
