Another wounded castle guest

HIYA!!   SAVANNAH HERE!!!

What is goin’ on?!! I have another introoder castle guest livin’ in Mom L’s office. And it looks like there’s  hospital tray set up on our linen cabinet outside her office. Sheesh!! And my pet nanny Miss Kandi comes by one and two times a day and disappears into Mom L’s office for like a kabillion hours?? What is up?! So I had a little chat with Mom L and she finally let me in on all the fuss. Ever since I got us started with our own rescue, Delta View Cats, things have been hoppin’ around here!

We have another injured foster cat, Buddy, from Miss Kandi’s six cat colony she feeds and cares for at the yacht club where she works. Miss Kandi called Mom L about ten days ago to ask her to check out a humongous lump on the back of Buddy’s head.

That lump was crazy hot and the size of a tennis ball!! And Buddy wasn’t feeling good at all. Buddy is about four years old. He has lived at the yacht club colony for about two years. He hangs out on the railing around the club porch and greets everyone coming and going.

Buddy is a laid back kinda’ man cat and he doesn’t bother the other colony cats. You can see that he takes life pretty easy

Once Mom L saw that lump she called her cat pal, my former feline Veterinarian now retired, Doc Josie. She had Mom L and Miss Kandi bring Buddy to her home so’s she could take a look at him. As soon as Doc Josie saw that lump she knew it had to be an abscess. She inserted a needle and drew yucky puss into the syringe proving Buddy had a severe abscess affecting one whole side and back of his neck. Buddy got some “nighty night” juice and pretty soon he was in LaLa Land. Doc Josie used electric clippers to clip away his furs so she could get a better look.

Long story short, Doc Josie made three incisions and one was the mother lode for sure. She drained a cup of yucky stuff outta Buddy’s neck. Thankfully he didn’t need stitches because that abscess was going to need to drain.

WARNING: PHOTOS ARE GRAPHIC!

You can see Doc Josie had to flush his wound over and over again. Finally she was sure Buddy didn’t have any more yucky gunk to flush out and she gave him a pain injection and antibiotic. Mom L helped Doc Josie do all of this and Miss Kandi waited in the next room—tender tummy.

Buddy has been recovering here in my castle under Dad P, Mom L and Miss Kandi’s care. He is living in Mom L’s office where Gigi once lived. Buddy had to start out in a cage ‘cuz he was pretty woozy from the pain meds and whatnot.

Like Gigi, Buddy soon earned his freedom from the cage in Mom L’s office. He has been very patient getting his injectable antibiotic and fluids for the first few days of his recovery as well as allowing warm compresses three to four times a day. He has been soaking up all the love from everyone. That’s his loving caretaker/feeder Miss Kandi.

Buddy has gone from living outside for the last two to three years—

To having the opportunity to test drive living inside here at my castle—

I’m thinking Buddy Bud is gonna like moving to a forever home—inside forever. What do you think??

Keep your eyes peeled blogville—you just may see Buddy again sooner than you think! *wink, wink*

When cats are too smart for their own good

HIYA!!   SAVANNAH HERE!!!

I know all of my readers know what TNR is; but let me just say a couple of things about “targeted” Trap, Neuter, Return which is what my our nonprofit, Project Delta View Cats, does.

We go door to door within intact neighborhoods to learn who is feeding abandoned community cats and whether or not they need no cost spay, neuter or perhaps medical treatment for the cats they feed. By targeting complete neighborhoods, or complete colonies in one location like our Riverview park cat colony, we are able to trap out the entire population to eliminate any possibility of further breeding. Abandoned community cats, left intact, are subject to a wide array of illnesses from fighting and mating. Once we can reduce the desire to roam and mate, we reduce not only unwanted kittens being born but we also increase the adult cats’ long term health.

I say all that ‘cuz now you will understand why Mom L and other volunteers have been trying for about three months to trap an intact male cat that comes for his meal once a day at one of our park feeding stations. The park feeders named him Freddie the Freeloader! MOL!!

Turns out that Freddie is what we call a “trap savvy” kind’a kitty. He hears a teensy tiny “clink” of metal and he is gone! This mancat has been trapped before. Now, the all our park cat colony is already spayed and neutered so we are not much concerned about him starting any “families” or fights in our park colony. BUT—cats roam and who knows where Freddie goes let alone how much we will improve his own health and well being if we can just trap him and get him “snipped”!

Standard trapping practice is to cover the baited trap with a towel to create the appearance of a safe dark space for the cat.

First time Mom L tried to trap Freddie, she did her usual “special bait” of salmon and stinky sardines. Freddie didn’t even bother to show up!!!

Next time Mom L used “camo” cover from a kids birthday party decorations. She baited it this time with ONLY stinky sardines. Of course, Mom L also sprinkled food grade diatomaceous earth under the area where the bait was to keep the stuppy ants away.

All set! Now where is the cat???

Mom L didn’t have long to wait. She sat in her car reading her latest book on her Kindle and after about thirty minutes, all of a sudden, there was Freddie!! Up above the feeding station where the trap was waiting for him.

Mom L was now on the alert! Watching Freddie’s every move. She was holding her breath when he slowly stepped carefully, on paw forward at a time, down the slight embankment toward that delightful smelling stinky trap!

Freddie was sniffing that tantalizing stinky goodness of those slimy, squishy canned sardines. It was almost more than he could stand.

Squeee! His head is under the trap door!!! GO FREDDIE!!!

And then, he ran up that hill like he knew the world was gonna end instantly!! MOUSES!!!

In a minute later, Mom L heard a “meew” under her car and a very skinny little girl kitty emerged, talking back to Mom L like they were gonna be best pals.

Next thing Mom L knew that kitty dashed, starving, into the trap!!! So Mom L and Freddie still have a few more “trap” dates to make sure he gets his “snip” appointment, but check out this totally darling, friendly ladycat that is now under our care.

Meet Chiquitita!! (Yes! After the ABBA song!

We are not certain, but Chiquitita may be a bilingual kitty. She appears to respond to Mom L’s “not so good” Spanish!

So, what have you been doing lately that just makes your day??!!

An update on kittens from Oak Hills Project

HIYA!! SAVANNAH HERE!!!

I thought you might enjoy some photo updates from the two kittens we were able to get into forever homes from that Oakhills project I posted about last year.

This is the TNR project that brought our very own foster kitten to us, Pipsqueak.

Mom L received an update in December on little Pip who is now in his forever home. He and his resident brofur, Barsik, are getting along just great! You can see Barsik in the background on one of the photos below. Pip has warmed right up to his new male and female humans and is doing so great!

It warms Mom L’s heart to know the kitten she worked so hard to socialize is now forever happy.

The other kitten from this project who found his forever home is Rocky. He was trapped the same night as Pip but he was released because Mom L couldn’t hear his thoughts about how much he wanted to be an indoor kitty!! Well Rocky was socialized through a screen patio door by the young son of the family where this colony hangs out in their backyard. And one day, the Mom decided to bring Rocky inside and he has been there ever since!

Please notice that Rocky has even found a wonderful friend with the resident kitty Sapphire AND with the resident doggies, Lucky!!

Our Delta View Cats small all volunteer group had so many wonderful outcomes this past year. And these two brofurs are so special.
