Savannah's Paw Tracks

Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

My Nightly Manipulation (vocab builder) Routine…

Hiya! Savannah here…

You all know by now that we cats  change stuff we do into new stuff we do so the old stuff we did is stuff we don’t do anymore…and may never do again…got it??

I used to join Dad and Mom at night after my dinner…I would sit on the couch with Mom, Dad always gets the chair…Mom’s side of the couch has that movable thingy for her legs just like Dad’s chair….but, Dad gets the chair ‘cuz I wouldn’t sit on the couch with him!

So, I would even sometimes sit right next to Mom, snuggling a bit, sleeping while they watched TV. They LOVED having me join them.

Then, about 4 months ago…that stuff I did with them on the couch became stuff I don’t do anymore and now I have new stuff I do at night…

Dad calls it my nightly “DRIVE BY”…I sometimes have to repeat it, once,  over an hour.  I only do repeats if the “MESSAGE” doesn’t get through to Dad and Mom fast enough.

About 8-8:30 PM…I start…first, I come from our bedroom down the hall, walk in to the kitchen and over to my water and food station. I get a little refreshment, my left overs and something to drink.

Then, I walk from my feeding station into the family room where they are sitting watching TV…I walk very slowly, sort of just strolling…I pass in front of the entertainment unit with the humongous TV on the wall over it…then I sniff a bit, sometimes I mark (with my chin oil) the wood…then I look pointedly at Mom first…then Dad…I keep strolling past the entertainment unit…stop and sniff some more right in front of Dad…look pointedly at him…and out of sight…

Now, I wait…in the bedroom…’cuz that was the DRIVE BY to let them know…”hey, it’s time to play with me and then I am ready for bed!!!…”

If they don’t come to the bedroom within about 30 minutes…I repeat the DRIVE BY…sometimes I tease them by strolling to the small coffee table in front of the couch, sniff, sniff…rub, rub…like I might jump up with Mom…but then I move away again…back down the hall…

If the first DRIVE BY doesn’t make them guilty enough for ignoring me, then the second one does…Mom whines at Dad…and usually I don’t have to do a 3rd DRIVE BY…

AND THAT MY FURRIENDS IS MY NIGHTLY MANIPULATION ROUTINE!! WORKS EVERY TIME!!!

I am doing a very thorough job of training my Dad and Mom…manipulation always work…’cuz they really want some Savannah loving and I hold that out as their little treat for being good staff.  It takes time, but trust me fellow cats and dogs (and piggies and birdie), this works!

  2. Hey Savvy, Your Champion here. Hi Miss Linda.

Oh Savvy, you clever feline. Sometimes our bipeds can be a little dense… 3 drive by (s)? Jeepers…

When we want Mom’s attention, we either sit on her and totally block the tv or walk in front of it and block it… that usually means we need to empty our tanks!

We see a bit of ignoring going on too sweet Savannah, we gotta tell you, we bet those drive bys are gonna work sooner or later. Pooh wants to tell you what she does to get what she wants, maybe you can try it and see if that works for you. She gets up in Popsy’s lap and rubs all over his face so he can’t see TV. It don’t take long for her to get his attention. We change our routine a lot too. Good job sweet Savannah! Hugs and nose kisses

    • oohhh…hmmmm..my…I wish I could try Pooh’s tactic…but, well…errrr…ummmm…ya see..I am still kind’a nervous around my Dad, he is a man in case you didn’t know that…and…I still don’t ‘do’ laps…sigh…but appreciate the suggestion…and hope to hear from the kitties more often Chancy..even tho’ I totally luvluvluv hearing all about you sweet guy! Lovely job on keeping your huMom and huMan guessing. I personally just pulled a job on my own huMom. For years I’ve slept on her chest, winter or summer, every night. She would sometimes get a little impatient with the time it took metro get comfortable. Then, a couple months ago she bought me a catnip quilt from a wonderful group that sells them to care for out feral cousins. It’s nicely padded, with lovely prints with a catnip flower on one side and lovely soft velvety material on the other. In-between there is that silvery space/emergency blanket material. It works to make the quilt warm up using my body heat. Anyway, huMom put it at the foot of the bed, and now I sleep there ALMOSY every night. My advice, dear Savannah?, is every now and again revert to your old sofa cuddles behavior. Just one night, every so often. You want to make sure that THEY aren’t sure. Sometimes you have to give them a little taste of what their missing.

Oh Meow, look how I’ve rattled on. Take care sweet Savannah. It sounds like you’ve got your huMom and huMan comming right along. Soon people will think you started them as just a kitten. I know some say it’s harder when you get them later, but it just takes patience.

    Purrs to you, dear one,
    Mistletoe

    • Oh HI!! Misstletoe!!!…how are you??? ANd you know, you are so wise! It is all about patience. And I think I understand about the ‘make a change every now and then to keep them on their toes/paws”…I just sort’a seemed to know that already…at least that is what Mom would say!! MOL. Paw pats sweet Mistletoe…peeESS…would you ask your huMom to send me a photo of you sometime??? my email address is:
ms.savannahcoolkat@gmail.com that would be pawsome! Paw Pats, Savannah

  6. OH! Have your Mom send you counter surf pix again to Mommy’s email–we had a couple others and we’re gonna do another post!

  7. ai yi yi! Your Mommy sings just like ours…

    *sigh*

CC and Kona are the principle drivers-by at our house. CC is VERY insistent about his nightly spanking!

  8. Hi Savvy hope all is well and you still visit our blog xxx

  9. I bark really loud at my mom when it’s bed time. It’s good at getting the point across!
    Luv,
    Dave

  10. Well humans are a little slow to understand sometimes don’t you think?

  11. Hi Savannah, if you want to train your humans, you need an Bad Idea CAT-alog – very urgent…

    • runs to Dad…can I use your plastic card thingy??…I need to order a Bad Idea-CAT-alog…Easy told me it was urgent!!…runs back…gets on Google…does search…clicks “purchase”…thanks Easy! Paw pats, Savannah

  12. Training bipeds is hard work, but I agree with you that it’s worth the effort.

  13. Nice on Savvy, I wish my humans were as well trained!

    • oh nooooooo…everyone thinks she was singing…no, no…she was trying to call me over so Dad could take a better video…Mom is hiding under the bed ‘cuz everyone is making not so nice comments about her voice…she had no idea it would come through so loud…prolly would not have posted that thing if she realized it MOLMOL…Savannah

  15. Well done, miss Savannah. Always keep your staff well trained! Outstanding technique

Well, Honey, OF COURSE you don’t come to them!

What was that horrific caterwauling I heard??? Is your Human deluded enough to think that would ATTRACT you rather than send you running as fast as your paws can carry you in the opposite direction???

Tell her to go to choir practice for awhile and then you’ll talk. Till then? Pfft.

    • oh my cod!…Mom went UTB to hide when she read your comment this morning Spitty…that was a bit harsh and cold, don’t ya think??? I mean Mom was actually just calling to me…she did not know how horrid loud she was on that video…Dad is still laughing..Mom is still UTB!!!

  17. Oh yeah…keep the humans guessing. That’s what us cats do….very well!

  18. That’s it! Ignore them! I disappointed Pop tonight. He thought he’d have Keisha and a movie but I never came in & sat next to him.

Hey Savannah! You are training your people well! I have never been involved in human training. Nellie has them firmly in hand!

  20. Humans are so very hard to train. I works on it constantly. We thinks Arty Mouse might be on the back side of the property. Mommy & Fen thought they may have seen her when they were walking. Paws crossed they were right and she will be home soon. I misses my sister. Socks & I are going to take a look for ourselves, we may or may not tell Mommy what we discover. After all we are cats we do not have to share information if we do not wish too. ~Scylla

    • oh Scylla…I can’t even let my imagination go there…to think Arty Mouse might be so close to home???Why or why would he not come home??? What has happened t him???…you all be very careful if you go to check out where he might be…it is dangerous for us cats to be outside if not under constant supervision of our huFamily, at least that is what I believe. You all be very careful…stay safe…huge paw pats, Savannah

    • Scylla, I just put Arty Mouse’s badge on my page…I wanna support all of you having him come home…right now!!! paws crossed…Savannah reaches out to softly stroke Scylla’s lovely fur…be well my special girlfurriend…luv you, Savvy

  21. Oh yes, it’s fun just to keep them guessing what we’re going to change next, great job Savannah!

  22. Good job Savannah, training your peoples. That is terrific. We have our person trained pretty well too. Take care.

    • oh do you?? What techniques do you use??? I could use some additional moves, ‘cuz I still have some pretty serious things that need manipulating, I mean changing, so give me some tips…thanks Paw Pats, Savannah

  23. There you go, you’ve got it down pat – reward the behaviour you want and ignore the behaviour you don’t want. Good routine!

  24. Savannah!!! You’ve been talking to Austin??? You kitties got us just where you want us!! lol

    • oohhh…errrr…ummmm…well, ahhhh…you did send your mailing info to Mom…so, well, maybe Austin and I have exchanged a couple of notes…but that’s all, I swear!!…whispers behind paw to Austin..keep them guessing Austin…OK?…shhhhhh….Savannah

  25. What a great routine you have Savannah. You really have your humans trained well too – they are very obedient.

  26. Wow. I am so glad my dogs are asleep and didn’t read this… cause if they had I would be getting that stinky ‘you need to go to sleep’ eye, too!

  27. Ah yes – the nightly drive-by……I did that one for a while too Savannah and indeed it does work – especially when staff is already well on the way to being totally trained! 😀 Way to go girlfriend!

    Kitty hugs, Sammy

Waving paw...HI!...what'd 'cha think...??
