Autobiography of a Former Shelter Cat

Oh What A Night…

I don’t know what got into me last night…but I was like a totally crazy cat for playing!!

Mostly I used my karate moves, but I also managed to get in some moves sort’a like Moma Cat on the Cult of Otis blog.  She has a fav of hers that I am practicing, but I am doing it in the reclined mode.  You’ll see my rendition of that incredible move of hers…gonna take a lot of practice!

So first, I’m concentrating on getting the “wax on wax off” move with my front paws…building upper body strength to get faster with this move…takes concentration ya  know…

Then I move on to practicing Moma Cats Flying Squirrel move…but I have a different take on it ‘cuz I don’t jump like her…so I am working on the Reclined Flying Squirrel…here ya see me working on the Half Reclined Flying Squirrel move…it ‘s important to look crazed when doing it so ya gotta work on the facial expression too…

Finally, I got in some karate kick stuff…again, notice I am doing it from the floor…reclined position…really requires a lot of ab control…pretty hard actually…

Then…I got a really good brushing to cool me down…and I cuddled first half of the night with Dad and then I switched about half way through the night to Mom…I share my lovely soft warm bod’ between them…makes ’em happy!

That’s it…Paw pats, Savannah

BREAK THROUGH…tiny paw steps forward again

Ok, it may not seem like lots to some…BUT…I totally flabbergasted Mom and Dad last night…myself too actually.

They were all relaxed and watching TV in our family room…and you may remember I used to hang with them in there at night, sit with Mom and watch TV too.  Then I had the “SET BACK” about 7 or so weeks ago and just stopped hanging with them in the family room at night.

Well…I always have my after dinner snack at my breakfast room feeding station…then I walk through the family room, usually about 7PM or so…and walk right in front of the TV, give them the “look” that says “sorry, can’t stay…stuff to do…” and keep on walking down the hall…then I return in about an hour to let them know I am ready to play  and have them join ME in  our bedroom.

Weeellllllll…last night…drum roll again please! BA BOOM BA BOOM…I started my stroll past the TV, then Mom invited me over to the couch…and WHAMMO…I hung a left and walked right over to the couch and jumped up!!! YES!

Dad was so startled he stopped the show they were watching…then I checked out what was left on Mom’s dinner plate, another thing I NEVER do…then I jumped on the back of the couch and walked back and forth sniffing…I NEVER do that either!!!

Oh My Cat!! so now Mom is shocked like…and they left the TV off so long it went to that thingy where the ICON just starts rolling around on the screen and I watched that a teeny bit with them…then Mom gave me a pet and I jumped down..that’s it….that’s my BREAK THROUGH for last night!

Pretty cool huh? No photos of course ‘cuz it all happend so unexpected like…Dad couldn’t grab the picture taking thingy.

So this  morning, I was hangin’ out in the entry with my furriend Nanuk and we talked about last night…he is my “pretend” Sibe pal…I get courage from Nanuk.  He thought I did a great job last night.

So later, they came back to the bedroom earlier than usual just to reward me…and  I played lots with Dad and Mom…

…we all finished watching TV there.

Pa w pats to all, Savannah

What Were The Humans Thinkin’…?

Nobody seems to talk about this too much,  so I decided I would. It’s about what sometimes happens  to us adult cats when humans rescue us from shelters.  We are returned for some of the oddest reasons..so this raises a question in my mind…

“Just how much do humans think through what it means to adopt an adult cat?”

I know that adopting an adult cat…meaning one that is a year old or older…is different than adopting a young kitten. The kitten doesn’t have as long a history of life events as we adults do.  And of course, the older the cat, the more life experiences (good and bad) they have.

That means we usually need lots more adjustment time when we get a forever home…and we toally need our new family to help us out lots.

So here’s my “nit to pick”…I totally agree that animal shelters need to allow humans to return adult cats if they don’t work out in the new home…otherwise the cat would just get dumped on a street…but I have to wonder what humans are thinkin’ when they take an adult cat home and return them for reasons like these…

Spreckles was 18 mos. old, loved to play, loved peeps, enjoyed other cats and totally loved a good lap and lots of pets
RETURNED: after a couple weeks, the family returned her ‘cuz she was “too affectionate”…Huh?!

Fred was 10 years young…loved to play and Oh Cat! What a lap dude! And he was drop dead gorgeous…he was a Norwegian Forest Cat…everyone knows these guys are pretty hefty and that was Fred…no small cat he…so, gets adopted by a retired couple who come lookin’ for a Maine Coon cat or one big like that…

RETURNED: after less than 48 hours ‘cuz he was TOO BIG! What!!??

Peep and Bo…brothers and 8 years old.  They were dumped at the county shelter ‘cuz their family moved and didn’t get a new place where they could keep the cats. So they were saved by my former shelter, a private no kill non-profitshelter.  So this ladie wants them, has the shelter hold them over the Christmas holidays ‘cuz she has company and she wants their arrival to be as free of stress as possible.  I thought, now that’s very nice, Huh? She visited them several times before she could take them home.
RETURNED: after a month or so ‘cuz they were to difficult to manage…they were having some adjusment problems and took it out on each other…back they came. This is Peep…

Ashley…she was about 12 months old…and loved to play, cuddle and be with people.  Just a real sweetie.
RETURNED: twice! mostly ‘cuz she was too playful! She was 12 months old! Don’t human know we like to play until we are really really old??

I guess I am just asking humans to think through what it means to adopt an adult rescue cat. It is tough on us when we get returned for reasons that could have been thought through before taking us to a home and giving us hope that we have found our forever family.

That’s just my opinion…my thoughts…I’m gonna go take a nap now and think more about “why humans should adopt adult rescue cats”…maybe I could talk about that ‘cuz I really do think we are worthwhile.

Catch’ya later, Savannah
