Do You Hunt Indoors?: Friday Frolics

HIYA!!  SAVANNAH HERE!!!

Yep, that’s right…I am talking about hunting indoors for all my feline furriends who live indoors just as The Kid Sage and I.  The concept of indoor hunting is all about technique.  Where did you learn your technique?  Let me know in comments so we can all share our learning.

Dad play 3

Most of us indoor cats have not been outside so we often need some fine tuning with our indoor hunting techniques.

Speaking for myself…I learned my best indoor hunt techniques from Mama Cat…from the Blog of Otis.

Mama Cat taught me the importance of four sequential moves that must be performed by any cat practicing hunting techniques indoors….

 How's this?

I miss my lessons about proper hunting techniques from Mama Cat…but as you can see…I have not forgotten anything I learned from her…

  3. Hmm I like the kill face bit – but as outdoor cats, our techniques are remarkably similar to our indoor cousins! The same careful stance, the same stillness then the POUNCE!

  4. Momma Kat iz lookin down wif pride Savannah!!
Ya leerned well frum her 😉

Savannah! That last picture is just . . . FANTASTIC! It should be in a museum!!

Yes! There *are* buffaloes in the park, pretty far out toward the ocean, just beyond Spreckels lake where people race those toy boats. There are maybe 15 or so? They were first put there in the 1890s the Human thinks. They’re really pretty boring to watch, ha ha meow. They mostly just stand around and graze or lie down and zone out to nap. Gee, kinda reminds me of some other furry animals’ habits…..

  8. Love that expression, the last one was purrfect!

That last shot is FIERCE, Savvy! We’re indoor kitties, and we definitely love to hunt. 🙂

  10. Ohhh Savvy your ‘kill face’ is fierce! Those ‘paws of death’ too! Hope you are teaching Sage to be as wonderful a hunter as you! I learned what I could from my Mom before I came to live with my human Mom. Mom made sure I watched lots of the Animal Channel kittens too so I got some pointers there too. Hope you are having a wonderful week-end!

  11. oooooh! Your Kill face is…um…KILLER! Say–we wanna see more of your new tree…

    • check out Monday next and then Aug 1. Mom L is helping me get stuff set up cuz she and Dad P are doin’ another (!!!) ‘get-away’…and we ask…’get-away’ from whom??????????? Paw hugs, me and Mom L and Dad P…and see you next March 2015 when the 3 Moggies comes to visit Vegas!! WOO HOO!!!

  12. In our house, hunting is about realism. Our human will pull a long, grassy weed from outside and bring it in for us to play with – it smells wonderful like the great outdoors and we love to jump up high in the air to catch it as she waves it over us!

  13. You look like Sasha Fierce, BFGF. I’m so proud of you although I thought you leaerned hunting from me. MOL! Those are great shots Mom L. took. I can’t watch too long or TW gets bored and stops playing. sigh.

  14. We think you have a fine hunting technique, Savvy. We love to hunt indoors. Mostly our toys…but every once and awhile some unsuspecting bug or spider makes it way inside…and LOOK OUT!

  15. Oh my goodness Savannah you scared us with your hunting face!

  16. of course I hunt indoor… mice, flies and dustbunnies :o) Your face in the last picture is great! It should be the cover of National Geographic next month :o)

  19. Hi Savannah,
Our kitties can hunt outside, during day time at least. Here [http://pitsfritztownnews.wordpress.com/2014/07/23/deer-in-the-garden/], in the 4th video, you can watch Mr. Pickwick trying to catch himself some deer. But he seems to have quite short an attention span. 😉
    Have a good one,
    Pit

  20. Bravo Miss Savvy, you going your best kill face on fur sure!

Last night Lightning was on the hunt inside for a big bug that flew in through the open door. He loves to try to catch bugs outside too, especially “lightning” bugs.

  22. Great photos! I love these! Especially the last one!
My kitties are pawsome indoor hunters! I’m not sure where they learned their technique, but they have pawfected it! They are masters at doing the sneak attack to my huskies. hehehehe
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!

OMG you hunt like I hunt – even the same kind of prey. It’s fun, isn’t it! The feather is especially good. Sometimes I have to chase a treat ball around too that has my diet kibble in it. That’s not bad either, but it’s actually too easy.

  24. S & S…we hunt in doorz two… tho troo lee we dunno wear we lurned R skills….we think it was a package deel ore sum thin when we wuz adopted may bee & R fav o rite thing ta hunt iz de kitchen rug…itz vizshuz but stoooooopid… coz it never moves frum de same spot….one wood think after we fited it onze ore 83 times it wood like get up N go…but it doesn’t…heerz two a raccoon butterflyfish kinda week oh end… ♥

  25. You’ve really got some moves!

  26. I clicked over to see Mama Cat and I can see that you learned her technique. You have a fierce “kill face” Savvy!

  27. Impressive! Mom makes me hunt for my MilkBone Chew every night. I wait in the bathroom till she hides it. My technique is RUN AND SNIFF till I find it.

    Love and licks,
    Cupcake

  28. Mama cat would be proud indeed the kill face is a great shot..and shows that you are well to feared..especially if you are a fevver 🙂 hugs and loves Fozziemum xxx

  29. Great technique Savvy! You learned well………love the kill face but my fave photo is the last one with your paws ready to ATTACK!

    Hugs, Sammy

  30. That’s a pawesome kill face, Savvy! Indoor cats absolutely can hunt! The peeps have been slacking with helping us hunt. Thanks for the reminder that they need to take more time to play with the interactive toys with us!

  31. Yes, we do hunt indoors! And as we live in the country, we do get mice in the house occasionally, and slow worms in the cat run. We are perhaps unusual in that we hunt as a pack! We all cooperate on stakeouts. Sadly, #1 takes our catches away from us whenever she can, and preferably when they’re still alive.

  33. Look at you go!

  34. So pleased that Mama Cat lives on in your hunting Savvy!

  35. Very good Savvy,you learned well,xx Speedy

  36. What great form, Savvy! What’s really fun for me is when a moth or lizard gets inside and I can practice on live prey!

  37. Excellent, Savy! We definitely will have to work on our kill face. Yours is much better!
    Happy Friday.
    XOXO

  38. Meez a indoor hunter tu Savannah. And since meez finks kittys belong in da house away fwum all da outside dangers then meez finks indoor hunitin’ be gweat. 🙂
