Update: Kauai Community Cats Need Our Help

HIYA!  SAVANNAH HERE!!

I am back again with an important update about the struggle of the Kauai Community Cat Project (KCCP) and the Kauai island county government. I have to warn you that I kind’a have my neck furs all standing up ‘cuz I am in a bit of a snit over what’s going on in secrecy in Kauai.

I was once a stray—this could have been my fate!

I was once a stray—this could have been my fate!

In August I let you know about a potential ban being placed on all TNR (trap, neuter, return) efforts on the whole five hundred and fifty plus square miles of land on Kauai. You can read all about it here.

Yep, you got that right! This county council committee, the Feral Cat Ordinance Committee, is working hard, and in secret, to craft strategies which will map the whole island and declare it as “sensitive bird habitat”. The WHOLE island my pals, which leaves nowhere for community cat colonies to be managed and decreased over time through TNR.

Community cats

Here is the latest update we received just late last week from Mr. Basil Scott, President of KCCP.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: From Kauai Community Cat Project
Sunshine Law Complaint Filed To Prevent County From Enacting Ordinance Resulting From Closed-Door Meetings!

“On September 20, 2016, Kauai Community Cat Project (KCCP) filed a Sunshine Law complaint to prevent the County from enacting an ordinance resulting from years of closed-door meetings. Council member Yukimura, who helped to define this process and has personally led it for the last year-and-a-half, has publicly defended the County’s closed-door approach.

Now here is the big deal that pushed KCCP to file a complaint against the county council’s Feral Cat Ordinance Committee. The state of Hawaii has what is called a “Sunshine Law”. The Sunshine Law is Hawaii’s open meetings law. It governs the manner in which all state and county boards must conduct their official business.

§92-1 Declaration of policy and intent. In a democracy, the people are vested with the ultimate decision-making power. Governmental agencies exist to aid the people in the formation and conduct of public policy. Opening up the governmental processes to public scrutiny and participation is the only viable and reasonable method of protecting the public’s interest. Therefore, the legislature declares that it is the policy of this State that the formation and conduct of public policy – the discussions, deliberations, decisions, and action of governmental agencies – shall be conducted as openly as possible.

I am asking all my readers who support TNR as the ONLY strategy for humane management of community cat over population to let your voices be heard. The community cats on the island of Kauai don’t have voices.

Voiceless

Voiceless

Those rescue groups who have been their advocates have been held out of meetings where the well being of this cat population is being determined.

Please, send emails to every committee member, especially the chair, Council member Joann Yukimura, asking them to behave democratically and openly.

Never Let This Happen Again #remembermethursday

HIYA! SAVANNAH AND THE KID SAGE HERE!!

The Kid Sage and I are joining paws across the world to bring focus on the urgent need to remember all those companion, adoptable animals who were not fortunate like us—their forever family did not find them. Some, well—they did survive because of that.

Savvy message

JUST SAY NO!

NO MORE RESCUE ANIMALS LEFT BEHIND

#remembermethursday #remembertherescue

Today is a day to #remembertherescue #remembermethursday. This global event across all channels of social media is founded and hosted by Helen Woodward Animal Center along with brands which support this movement.

I am a former adult shelter cat, considered “less adoptable” due to my extreme shyness and fear. I am going to make a difference, four paws at a time, if that is what it takes.

dont leave me behind

Many of us who work the social media channels to promote those who are languishing in shelters, left without hope—and no matter what social medial channel we use—we always get all those comments about ” so hope [it] finds a  home”; wish I were closer; etc. Those are always kind THOUGHTS.

But, #remembermethursday is a CALL TO ACTION. I, Savannah the Cat, say do not leave those comments unless you also tell me that you have SHARED that rescue animal’s plight, urgency across every social media channel you access. Even if you can email that plea to all your friends. DO SOMETHING!

These animals literally die. They need OUR GLOBAL COMMUNITY to SHARE SHARE SHARE AND PROVE WE CARE!

*steps down, one paw at a time, off soap box*

Many caring humans believe that once a cat is “rescued” by a non-profit rescue, and taken into foster care that he cat is now “safe” and “has a home”. That is so not true. I tried very hard to bring to light the fact that there are hundreds of rescues who have “foster adult cats” languishing in their care and these cats are so adoptable it makes me, Savannah the Cat, almost ashamed to have the loving home I now have.

I was totally considered as “less adoptable”. I was extremely shy and terrified of both other cats and humans. And yet, even though my rescue shelter told Mom L and Dad P that I did not need any toys as I never played—loving care and a patient home proved everyone wrong. If not for the rescue system, I would not be writing this blog.

This year you can all get the entire world talking about pet adoption. AND more importantly , you can help your favorite rescue bring home some Green Papers OR some NOMS!! Yummy! Enter HERE!

Please join me all day tomorrow to spread the love and caring all shelter animals need to NOT BE LEFT BEHIND.

BEST BREED EVER—ADOPTED!!!

PAW PATS AND HEAD BONKS, SAVANNAH AND THE KID SAGE

PeeEss—Please do not allow Momma Kat, aka #mammakatssearch, to be another left behind #remembertherescue #remembermethursday. Momma Kat still has not inquiries about adopting this courageous and loving mom cat. Please be ready for the update next week on #MommaKatsHopeChest

Announcement! My Guest Sunday Selfie Is…

HIYA! SAVANNAH HERE!!

Hope you all remember by last Sunday Selfie Guest…an unknown kitten with an unknown fur color. Here she is again.

Let me know in comments if you think this kitten is one of the following:

  1. multi-color cow kitten
  2. calico
  3. white with “shabby chic” accents
  4. no clue

Just say the number in comments and I will let ya know what my readers’ consensus is about what color furs this sweet kitten is showing off on my Monday blog post!!

Come on Doc, just get it over with, ok?

Come on Doc, just get it over with, ok?

Most of you thought she is likely a calico cat, which is certainly possible and what Mom L thought too. But her tail resembled a tabby cat!!

My tail is showing

One comment from my gal pals Scylla and Chimera from ATCAD blog suggested she actually resembles a Turkish Van cat. I went to Ms Wikipedia and I must say, this kitten DOES resemble the “Tortie” fur color of a Turkish Van cat! (photo courtesy of By 3Leonards – en wikipedia, Public Domain)

This cutie was one of three kittens getting their vaccinations, blood draw for snap test and worming at Community Concern 4 Cats (CC4C) special Kitchen Cat Clinic hosted by Ms Gemma, President of CC4C, and Ms Josie, retired cat specialist Vet, Mom L’s good friend.

Mom L had not been for several weeks so this week was especially important. Mom L was able to visit with and take photos of several special younger patients. One of whom was of course, my guest for my Sunday Selfie entry this week. Here are her litter mates.

Aren’t they a gorgeous threesome?! There was a really nice tortie girl too, but she was a bit older. And Doc Josie’s reassurances didn’t make her feel a whole ton better!

What'd'ya want lady??

What’d’ya want lady??

Of course she soon learned what Doc Josie wanted and Ms Tortie was none too pleased.

hey Doc, how's about we trade places!

hey Doc, how’s about we trade places!

One more young’in was up for her blood draw and she took it like a champ!

Let's get this part over with, OK?

Let’s get this part over with, OK?

Sorry I was late getting back to you all with the outcome of my little poll from my Sunday Selfie, but wasn’t it worth the wait?
